关于驻留:

2019年11月初,RMS接受了两位常驻北京的国际艺术家Monique Van Zyl 和 Brendan McCumstie的驻留申请,此后的每周末他们都在工作室进行珐琅学习和创作。

随着对珐琅工艺的逐渐了解和被800度高温后的新奇变化所吸引,两位艺术家的创作最终发生了出乎意料的变化。


艺术家自述:


来到Ruddy Metal Studio(RMS)驻留,我们的愿景是作为一对艺术家一起去探索如何融合我们的存在,进行独立个体实践和最终发展成一个共同体。


我们之前的创作灵感源自于截然不同的经历和影响,但我们的核心理念和灵感始终是一样的。一个专注于大体量且概念上具有挑战性的创新材料,如电子和反应性化学物质,另一个则致力于微型结构创作,重建和改造怀旧的物件和一些来自遗忘角落的动人元素。


尽管看起来很不一样,但作品主体的展开方式都是围绕着阴影、剪影和为观者提供一个有趣的可结合自身的开放式结尾。


RMS驻留项目让我们尝试新的方式工作并有机会交流思想,以此激发我们从而使我们的艺术实践逐步成型。工作室和工作在里面的艺术家具有开放的心态和给予鼓励,大家围在旧木桌上挑战每一个实验,桌子上刻有无数艺术家的记号和绘画,他们曾坐在完全相同的座位上受到启发和挑战,就像我们在这些时刻一样。


整个概念的形成和制作这一系列作品是一个真正的冒险,每件作品从窑中取出都演变成一个新的可能性,无论结果是否在计划中。我们被珐琅本身的特性迷住了,珐琅在熔化过程中的每一步都给它带来了不同的感觉。我们决定放弃色彩,把注意力完全放在几秒钟的窑差所产生的各种纹理上。(我们绝对创下了RMS工作室使用白色珐琅量的新纪录…)


我们在RMS实习期间最大的挑战和胜利是放弃对我们所做的一切的依恋,专注于纯粹的实验。我们最终完成的可以称之为被选中的作品只占我们实际完成数量的很小比例,即使它很美,如果觉得它没有达到了创作进化的终点,也不能被选中。


如果没有RMS studio的所有者和创始人Dan的无条件支持,这种在RMS的变革性体验是不可能实现的,她给了我们对她的工作室和窑炉的自由支配权。我们确信,我们的创作过程有时一定让她相当困惑,但她似乎对我们有足够的信心,向我们介绍了众多艺术家和创意产业的成员,这些联系为我们提供了未来参与北京艺术领域事件的宝贵机会。


About residency:


Our vision of what we aimed to explore throughout the RMS residency was working as a couple to merge our existing, individual practice anddevelop it into a collective one.


Our previous creative workhas been inspired by vastly different experiences and influences, but our core concepts and inspirations have always been the same. While one focused on large scale, conceptually challenging ideas in innovative materials such asfound electronics and reactive chemicals, the other worked inminiatures constructed and reworked from nostalgic objects and sensory elements recovered from forgotten places.


Even though seemingly very different, bothbodies of work orbited around concepts of shadows, silhouettes, and the playfulopen-endedness of the viewer creating their own content.


The RMS residency evolved our artistic practice by providing opportunities for us as artists to be invigorated through an exchange of ideasand new ways of working.The studio and its devotees provided the open-mindedness and encouragement tochallenge every experiment conducted around the studio’s well-worn woodentable, inscribed with messages and drawings from the numerous artists who havesat in exactly the same seat, inspired and challenged just as we were in those moments.


It has been a true adventure throughout the conceptualizing and making of this collection –every piece taken out of the kiln evolved into a new possibility, whether theoutcome was planned or not. We became entranced by the properties of enamel itself, how every step of its melting process lent itself to a different feel.We decided to forego colour and focus entirely


The biggest challenge and triumph of our time in the RMS residency was the letting go ofattachment to what we made and staying focused


This transformative experience at the RMS residency could not have been remotely possible without the unconditional support of Dan, owner and founder of RMS studio, who gave us free reign of her studio and kilns. We are sure that our process must have left her rather confused at times, but she seemed to have enough confidence in us to introduce us to numerous artists and members of thecreative industry, connections that provided us invaluable opportunities toparticipate further in Beijing’s art world.

每一件可佩戴的作品都代表了两位原创艺术家的一段过去经历。这些独一无二的作品影射了时间的流逝,道路的交叉和记忆的留存。


作品的相互作用让人联想起我们记忆的运作方式—故事的重叠—一层一层地建立我们的编年史。我们发现自己在生活中反复经历某些状况,然后,这两个时刻,由时间分割,可以建立一个新的叙述方式-有时聚焦,有时却以模糊呈现。


我们的生命是记忆的总和,而这些片段只代表了这些故事中的一小部分。


观赏者会被邀请去建立他们自己与呈现的图像之间的联系,去设想他们自己的生活的映射会是什么样子。


About exhibiton:

Each wearable piece represents a moment of the past from both of the collaborating artists, who have built these original works. They are one-of-a-kind creations representing the passage of time, the crossing of paths and the recording of memory.

The play of reflections is reminiscent of the way our memories work – the overlapping of stories - building layer upon layer of our chronicle. We find ourselves replaying certain passages in our lives over and over again prompted by one situation or another. Then, these two moments, spaced in time, can build a new narrative - sometimes in focus and other times a hazy image.

Our lives are the sum of our memories, and these pieces represent a small part of that story.

The viewer is invited to make their own connections to the images presented and begin to envisage what their own life reflection would be.
